Entre Volcanes (Between Volcanoes) is Hannah Collins' response, curated by Alicia Chillida, to the 12th Lanzarote Biennial. It consists of an open, ongoing project dedicated to the Mexican volcano Paricutín (in Purépecha Parhíkutini, “place on the other side”), on which the artist has been working in situ for the last two years. On the occasion of the Biennial, Paricutín establishes a dialogue with the volcanic specificity of the Canary Islands archipelago.
The theme of the project is an open reflection on ecology, sustainability and the future of the earth, the mythical value of fire and the observation of the sky, from Lanzarote and Michoacán, following the premises of the 12th Biennial. Attached is an essay by the artist that refers to her interest and dedication to this theme. An essay in the form of a literary work, so close to that of 19th-century European travellers that it could be included as a prologue to the project labelled in the room.
The volcano takes on a humanised nature in the minds of the inhabitants of Michoacán, who experienced its eruption in 1943. Due to its recent history and its uniqueness, having been born only once and erupted for nine years, 11 days and ten hours, it marked a significant historical event in global volcanology.
