Floating Time V2-C-12
This exhibition brings together spectacular works by leading international artists who have used light as material, medium, subject and metaphor. Featuring sculpture and installation from the 1980s to the present day, the show explores how artists have responded to the illuminated world that electric light made possible. The title is taken from the revolutionary 1913 Futurist opera Victory Over the Sun. Imagining the capture of the sun itself, the opera celebrated the power of technology to reshape the world. Its vision resonates with the invention of electric light, which transformed humanity's relationship with darkness, daylight and the natural world.
The works on display reflect on the presence of artificial light in everyday life, from domestic interiors and urban environments to advertising, popular culture and digital technologies. Others connect light to wider questions of science, energy, time, memory, identity and the cosmos. The exhibition explores light as a technology that has changed how we experience the world. Floating Time by Tatsuo Miyajima builds on this idea by using digital light to make time visible and connect us the space. In this work each counter counts down at a different speed, creating a constantly changing space of light, numbers and movement.
